Looking to Expand Volunteer Opportunities

One of the visions for Volunteer Morgan Hill is to increase interaction and involvement with local service providers, city departments and the schools. This past Tuesday, we made in-roads by participating in the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting in Council Chambers. In addition to introducing our organization to the Commission, we also met their special guest Dr. Wes Smith, Superintendent of the Morgan Hill Unified School District. Dr. Smith was there to explore ways that the School District and Parks and Recreation Commission can work together. Facing tighter budgets and a challenging economy, seeing our city come together to explore solutions is encouraging. Sometimes the worst of times brings out the best in us, and it was refreshing to see these two groups come together and engage each other in a dialogue that I am sure will continue throughout the year.

I am excited that we are part of this conversation and have the opportunity to make an impact going forward. Although our organization is still under development, it is clear that there are plenty of opportunities for us to explore and to add value to this community. We look forward to working with other departments, commissions and groups in town to increase volunteerism in our community. We're Sprouting

Our board sat down with Lindsay Bryant, staff writer for the Morgan Hill Times to talk about our organization and vision for 2010.

The result of our meeting is a great story that appeared in Friday's paper and on-line at MorganHillTimes.com, "Class project sprouts into volunteer operation". The first part of our discussion with Lindsay involved how Volunteer Morgan Hill was developed. We shared how our organization began as a project for the Leadership Morgan Hill class of 2009 and led to the success of our Volunteer Faire in September and the beginning of a new organization.

The second part of our discussion focused on our transition from a class project with Leadership Morgan Hill to an Alliance member with the Morgan Hill Community Foundation. As a result of the change, we are now
preparing to grow the organization, recruit new members, and begin the process of building partnerships and relationships with the City of Morgan Hill and local non-profit organizations.

The final part of our meeting centered on our vision for 2010 and beyond. Currently, our plans call for a repeat of the Volunteer Fair on Saturday, September 11th (Save the date!), and enhancements to our web site. www.VolunteerMorganHill.org

Our mission and vision remains the same- to be an integral part of this community and to add value to both service organizations and volunteers. We'll need more help and we hope we can count on you to be a part of our new and growing organization.

Volunteer Morgan Hill is now an Alliance Member of the Morgan Hill Community Foundation

We are pleased to announce that Volunteer Morgan Hill is now an Alliance Member of the Morgan Hill Community Foundation!

Founded as part of the Leadership Morgan Hill Class of 2009 project our new organization will continue to serve the needs of volunteers and service organizations in our community.

As an Alliance Member, Volunteer Morgan Hill will operate with a working board and is already working to repeat the success of last year's Volunteer Faire. The new board is made up of class members from the Leadership Morgan Hill Class of 2009 and include:

The board held its first meeting this past week and will be working in March to outline the make up of the new organization and begin the process or organizing the needs for the upcoming Volunteer Faire in September 2010. In addition, the board expect to build partnerships with local volunteer organizations and to further enhance the vision of volunteerism in our community.

Morgan Hill Delivers!

The results are in and Morgan Hill delivered! We had approximately 325 volunteers registered at our event. This means that 325 individuals raised their hand and then went out to visit with the various community non-profit organizations on hand at the faire. Mind you, not everyone who came to the faire registered, which means the number is likely to be much higher. From these 325+ registered volunteers, approximately 965 commitments to serve were made!!! Let me repeat that NINE HUNDRED AND SIXTY FIVE!!! Which means that people signed up for multiple commitments.

This is the spirit we were looking for, this is the vision we had all along. However, we never imagined just how much and how far our volunteers would go. Morgan Hill- we CONGRATULATE you for raising your hand and hope to see you again next year.

Live Oak High School Wins High School Challenge

With a total of 192 volunteer hours committed the Live Oak Acorns prevailed. Ann Sobrato High School came in second with 149 volunteer hours, Central High School with 32 hours, and Valley Christian with 6 volunteer hours.

Overall 379 volunteer hours were committed by our local high school students.

In 1955, the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill was chartered as a small club in a small town. It was comprised of professionals and business people with a common bond of fellowship and the desire to serve. Today, Morgan Hill is a much larger city but still retains a small town spirit. Our Club has grown too, with about 100 members who remain an integral part of our community's character. Over the years, our Club has donated well over a million dollars for community projects and programs, over $100,000 for college scholarships, and over $250,000 for humanitarian projects overseas. This is what Rotary is all about.

Operation Lifesaver, Inc., a national, non-profit educational organization, seeks to reduce collisions, injuries and fatalities at America’s highway-rail grade crossings and on the railroad rights-of-way. California Operation Lifesaver Train Awareness Program is a comprehensive train safety program that consists of the 3 E's: Education, Engineering and Enforcement for California's Railroad At-Grade crossings and Trespassing along the many miles of California's Railroad Rights-of-way. Free safety presentations are given to schools, community groups, school bus or professional truck drivers, emergency responders and other organizations. Volunteer Faire Participant: South County Housing

South County Housing has built nearly 2,700 homes since it was founded in 1979. Our earliest project provided housing for low-income farm worker families in Gilroy, CA. Over time, our service population has broadened to include seniors, families in transition, people with disabilities and families with children. We’ve partnered with 480 families to build self-help homes where they contributed their labor, supervised by construction professionals from South County Housing.

The American Cancer Society is at work in communities all across the country providing programs aimed at reducing the risk of cancer, detecting cancer as early as possible, ensuring proper treatment, and empowering people facing cancer to cope and maintain the highest possible quality of life.

We have volunteer opportunities for:
1. Drivers - assist w/ cancer Patients by giving them transportation to & from treatment centers

Volunteer Faire Participant: The Santa Clara County FireSafe Council

The Santa Clara County FireSafe Council is a non-profit organization whose mission is to mobilize the people of Santa Clara County to protect their homes, community and environment from wildfires.

We are seeking volunteers to participate in Community Outreach and Education Programs in the South County Area. Our major focus is teaching youth and adults the importance of Wildfire Prevention. Volunteer opportunities include staffing our informational table at local events and participating in Smokey Bear Story Time at local elementary schools and libraries as either Smokey’s helper or as Smokey himself.

We also need help with Hazardous Fuel Reduction Chipping Programs in the Wildland Urban Interface areas surrounding Morgan Hill, San Martin, and Gilroy. These programs help homeowners to create defensible space around their properties to prevent losses in the case of a wildfire.

We are also looking for interested individuals to help start a local South County FireSafe Council that will cater to the needs of the fire prone communities in Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy.

Volunteer Faire Participant: Habitat for Humanity-Silicon Valley

Our Mission:
We transform families and strengthen communities by partnering with volunteers, the community, and qualified families with low incomes, by building decent, affordable housing for long-term home ownership.

Our Vision:
To be the pre-eminent affordable home builder for hard-working, responsible families with low incomes in Santa Clara County wanting the stability and security of long-term home ownership.

History of this Affiliate:
Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley, an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, was incorporated as a nonprofit organization on July 21, 1986, as Bay and Valley Habitat for Humanity. In 1998 we changed our name to more accurately reflect our location. In 2007, we again updated our name to Habitat for Humanity Silicon Valley to align ourselves with the national concept of “One Habitat”.

In our 23 years of existence, we have built 44 homes:
· 24 homes in San Jose
· 10 homes in Alviso
· 6 homes in Campbell
· 3 homes in Santa Clara
· 1 home in Los Gatos

Our current projects are the construction of six homes on Gianera Street in the City of Santa Clara. Check the Construction page for more details.

Who We Serve:
We serve families who currently live in inadequate housing, are willing to volunteer a minimum of 500 hours of "sweat equity" labor on Habitat homes, and have an ability to pay for their home. All Habitat partner families participate in our Homeowner Self-Sufficiency program, designed to provide families with additional skills needed to increase economic self-sufficiency and become successful homeowners.

How Volunteers Help:
Volunteers are in integral part of Habitat's program. Volunteers, both skilled and unskilled, have helped build 44 homes to date. Volunteers also serve on our many committees, help in the office, and work on special projects. The houses are built using volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials contributed by churches, businesses, foundations, and by individuals.

How We Change Lives:
At Habitat for Humanity we believe that decent and affordable housing empowers people to reach their full potential. By freeing families from the unending struggles that accompany inadequate shelter, our houses open doors to increased self esteem, self reliance, and sense of community. With the stability of a safe and affordable home, children do better in school and families set ambitious goals for their lives. Neighborhoods are revitalized and in the process of bringing people together to build, Habitat creates a strong sense of community. Habitat is a permanent and sustainable solution to a hard-working, deserving family’s housing problems.

Our mission at Town Cats is to maintain a No-Kill Adoption Center/Shelter and foster home network for friendly homeless cats and kittens awaiting adoption.

MHARES/RACES provide a communication link between inter-city and inter-county via amateur radio. MHARES/RACES were instrumental in maintaining communications during the recent Verizon incident and the Morgan Hill flood of 2008. Amature radio provides a reliable and accurate means of information exchange incorporating voice and digital packet transmission.

Our mission is to establish and maintain the leadership and organizational infrastructure necessary to provide amateur radio communications in support of emergency management entities. Our mission is to preserve our city's history and to educate the public about our history. One of the ways we do that is by having our museum and the historic Morgan Hill House open to the public. But we need docents to open our doors.

Volunteer Faire Participant: Friends of the Morgan Hill Library

The Friends of the Morgan Hill Library was established in 1974 and will be celebrating its 35th anniversary this fall, on Saturday, October 24th.

The organization is committed to enhancing the programs, services and facilities of the Morgan Hill Library. We raise money through the Friends bookstore (located off the lobby of the library), online sales, and twice-a-year big book sales, as well as membership dues and donations. These funds are used to provide programs and activities and purchase materials and furnishings that are outside the scope of the library budget.

The Friends support family reading programs, the best-seller book collection, summer reading clubs (for children, teens and adults), story time entertainment, bi-lingual staff, Silicon Valley Reads events, speakers forums and other special presentations.

The Friends raised more than $180,000 through its 2006-2007 Beyond Books Campaign for art and furnishings for the new library. The organization contributed an additional $50,000 to this fund.

The Friends of the Library is operated entirely by volunteers. New members are always needed.

DreamPower Horsemanship provides therapeutic horsemanship programs and services for children, teens and adults with special needs. We focus on serving individuals with mental, emotional and behavioral problems as well as complex medical needs. We provide equine facilitated psychotherapy, therapeutic horsemanship lessons, equine facilitated learning partnerships with schools, the Equine Journey Wilderness Program, parenting skills groups, NARHA Horses for Heroes (for veterans), and training for therapeutic riding instructors and psychotherapists. Volunteer opportunities: Volunteers are needed to help with cleaning stalls and paddocks, filling water buckets, facility maintenance and repairs, fund raising, special events, and assisting with horseback riding lessons. Minimum age to volunteer is 14 years old.

The Bridge Project is a project to help the economically disadvantaged to escape the cycle of poverty they are trapped in. The project is based on the belief that five basic factors are at the core of the cycle of poverty, and if these five factors can be changed it will lead to a new life economically, and relationally, for these families.

1. Education is the foundation upon becoming marketable. Without education a family cannot escape the cycle.
2. Language Communicating in the English language is the key to fully understanding and applying the changes needed to make one's environment better.
3. Life skills The effective use of financial, personal, and relational life skills increases opportunities for personal development and growth.
4. Affordable Housing provides the personal living environment conducive to self development and security.

The Bridge Project is dedicated to providing resources that address each of these areas of need, and partners with other non-profits and churches to accomplish this goal. Current partners are:

Discovery Counseling Center responsible for life and language skills South County Housing responsible for affordable housing Morgan Hill Bible Church and Christ Our King Lutheran Church responsible for education

Additionally, a research project studying the effects of the Bridge Project is sponsored by Santa Clara University and being conducted by Dr. Cheryl McElvain.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is an emergency preparedness program supported by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA began promoting nationwide use of the CERT concept in 1994 based on a model created and implemented by the Los Angeles City Fire Department (LAFD) in 1985. Following a series of earthquakes in the United States and Mexico that left hundreds dead, injured and without emergency services, the LAFD recognized that well-trained civilian emergency work force teams are vital for disaster situations when the scope of incidents overwhelm conventional emergency services.

Morgan Hill CERT and the Morgan Hill Office of Emergency Services (OES)

The CERT team that serves the City of Morgan Hill falls under the direction of the Morgan Hill Office of Emergency Services (OES). The Office of Emergency Services (OES) is located in the Morgan Hill Police Department and is directed by the Special Operations Commander of the Police Department. The Coordinator of OES organizes the meetings and activities of cooperating groups (CERT, RACES/ARES ham radio operators, and others); prepares plans and processes for Citywide emergencies; provides information to the public and to city employees about emergency preparedness and response; maintains and inventories emergency supply caches; and, trains employees and volunteers in the management of shelters and Emergency Volunteer Centers

Volunteer Faire Participant: Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center (WERC)

The Wildlife Education and Rehabilitation Center in Morgan Hill, CA is both an acute care center for injured and sick wildlife and a nurturing center for orphaned wildlife too young to exist on their own.

W.E.R.C. operates as a temporary refuge as the organization's goal is not to tame, but to release animals back into their native habitat healthy, wild, and free.

Wildlife rehabilitation is an evolving science. Due to diverse requirements in care, feeding, handling and physical therapy, it is a process requiring skill, training, and continuing education.

W.E.R.C., with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers, has been recognized as meeting these requirements.

As such, it is the only facility in the South Santa Clara County licensed by California Department of Fish and Game and by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to care for native wildlife.

In addition to caring for native wildlife, W.E.R.C. provides a list of ancillary services to the community.

These services include:
• Educational programs for grades K-6. Special emphasis is placed on educating children about the importance of wildlife safety, habitat preservation, wilderness awareness, and our ability to co-exist with native wildlife.
• Telephone Advisory Service including reference and referral information.
• A Speakers Bureau providing presentations to community and service organizations.
• Participation in community events with educational exhibits.
• An Internship Program for college students.
• An Animal Handling Program training volunteers in the care and handling of the non-releasable educational animals.

Except for a small, variable fee charged for education programs,
all of the above services are offered free of charge.

FOSMAS is the IRS-registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to help the San Martin Animal Shelter with adjunct companion animal care, community outreach, and fundraising.

FOSMAS provides extensive care for newborn and prewean kittens that would have been euthanized at most other shelters; outsources veterinary services for medical conditions beyond the scope and means of our Shelter; and provides emergency veterinary care for severely injured animals received by our Shelter.

FOSMAS increases adoptions of Shelter and fostered companion animals through weekly petfairs, our permanent off-site adoption center at PetsMart-Milpitas, and special event petfairs at various locations in Santa Clara County.

Over the last couple of weeks we have been posting videos and content from the Serve.gov site, and our involvement in the United We Serve initiative.

For those of you unfamiliar with United We Serve, here is a short overview:
"United We Serve is a nationwide service initiative that will help meet growing social needs resulting from the economic downturn. With the knowledge that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things when given the proper tools, President Obama is asking us to come together to help lay a new foundation for growth. This initiative aims to both expand the impact of existing organizations by engaging new volunteers in their work and encourage volunteers to develop their own "do-it-yourself" projects. United We Serve is an initial 81 days of service but will grow into a sustained, collaborative and focused effort to promote service as a way of life for all Americans." (serve.gov)

Volunteer Faire Participant: Advent Group Ministries

Advent Group Ministries is a faith-based, non-profit, social service agency serving at-risk children and their families since 1986. Founded initially as a residential treatment program for adolescents, we have grown to include an outpatient recovery program, a comprehensive family counseling center and a foster care program for children of all ages.

Our recovery group homes provide residential treatment to addicted and emotionally distressed youth.

Our Step-Up! outpatient program offers teens struggling with substance abuse in-depth treatment while they remain in their homes.

Our foster homes provide loving and safe families for children who have been removed from their homes.

Our counseling center seeks to unify and strengthen troubled families and individuals by providing low-cost counseling services to the community.

Volunteer Faire Participant: Help One Child

The Mission of Help One Child is to recruit, train and support married couples or single adults willing to provide a home or volunteer services for foster children.

Help One Child is a non-profit, non-denominational, local outreach to at-risk children in the foster care system. Help One Child is a "hands-on" Christian ministry and has been embraced by over 700 churches in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties in California since 1993.

People volunteer for a wide variety of reasons, especially wanting to help others. But it's also OK to want some benefits for yourself from volunteering.

Some people are uncomfortable with the notion that a volunteer "benefits" from doing volunteer work. There is a long tradition of seeing volunteering as a form of charity, based on altruism and selflessness. The best volunteering does involve the desire to serve others, but this does not exclude other motivations, as well.

Instead of considering volunteering as something you do for people who are not as fortunate as yourself, begin to think of it as an exchange.

Consider that most people find themselves in need at some point in their lives. So today you may be the person with the ability to help, but tomorrow you may be the recipient of someone else's volunteer effort. Even now you might be on both sides of the service cycle: maybe you are a tutor for someone who can't read, while last month the volunteer ambulance corps rushed you to the emergency room. Volunteering also includes "self-help." So if you are active in your neighborhood crime watch, your home is protected while you protect your neighbors' homes, too. Adding your effort to the work of others makes everyone's lives better.

Your Motivations

Think about how much you receive when you give and consider why you want to volunteer. You may have several different reasons. Here are just a few of the many possible motivations identified by other volunteers:

* to feel needed
* to share a skill
* to get to know a community
* to demonstrate commitment to a cause/belief
* to gain leadership skills
* to act out a fantasy
* to do your civic duty
* because of pressure from a friend or relative
* satisfaction from accomplishment
* to keep busy
* for recognition
* to repay a debt
* to donate your professional skills
* because there is no one else to do it
* to have an impact
* to learn something new
* for freedom of schedule
* to help a friend or relative
* for escape
* to become an "insider"
* guilt
* to be challenged
* to be a watchdog
* to feel proud
* to make new friends
* to explore a career
* to help someone
* as therapy
* to do something different from your job
* for fun!
* for religious reasons
* to earn academic credit
* to keep skills alive
* because an agency is geographically close
* to have an excuse to do what you love
* to be able to criticize
* to assure progress
* to feel good
* to be part of a team
* to gain status
* because you were asked
* to test yourself
* to build your resume
* to be an agent of change
* because of personal experience with the problem, illness, or cause
* to stand up and be counted

You will probably have some special reasons of your own. Remember that the motivations you have to select the place to offer your services may not be the reasons why you stay. Once you're on the volunteer job, you will continue to serve as long as you feel that your efforts are accomplishing something, that your talents are appreciated, and that you make a difference. And if you also like the people with whom you work, so much the better!

As long as you are truly serving through your volunteer work, isn't it wonderful that such an exchange occurs? In fact, it tends to strengthen your commitment to volunteering when you can see the benefits to both the recipient of your efforts and to yourself. And it is much more comfortable than "charity" because it upholds the self-esteem of those with whom you volunteer.

Volunteer Morgan Hill Faire
Our1st Annual Volunteer Morgan Hill Faire will be held on Saturday, September 12th, 2009 from 9am-1pm at the Community and Cultural Center Amphitheater (corner of Dunne and Monterey).

At the faire, community service organizations will have the opportunity to educate hundreds of people seeking a place to serve with the mission, goals, and services of the organization.

For volunteers, the faire will provide an opportunity to meet representatives from community organizations, learn about the tremendous services they provide, and sign up to get involved.
